Wondering if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will be able to run the latest and greatest of iOS 8 when it’s released this fall to the public? Chances are good that it’s compatible, and if your device supports iOS 7 then it can probably run iOS 8 too, well, with the exception of the iPhone 4 at least.
Specifically, the following devices are compatible with iOS 8:
- iPhone 4S
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 5C
- iPhone 5S
- iPod touch 5th generation
- iPad 2
- iPad with Retina Display
- iPad Air
- iPad Mini
- iPad Mini with Retina Display
This list is provided directly from Apple, and though it could always change before the final release, it’s likely fairly set in stone due to being publicly listed on their official iOS 8 preview page.
It remains to be seen if all compatible iOS 8 devices will support each and every one of the highly anticipated features of iOS 8, typically some older devices lack support for some of the fancier features introduced in the most modern iOS builds, but you never know exactly how it will turn out. We will likely find out specifics at a later date as the beta builds continue to develop.
For the most part every device you’d expect to see is on the supported hardware list, though notably absent is the iPhone 4. It’s worth remembering that performance is rather sluggish on the iPhone 4 when it’s running iOS 7 even now, which perhaps was a determining factor when considering whether or not the phone should run iOS 8 too.
(Obviously any new iPhone or iPad hardware released by Apple from now onward will also be able to run iOS 8 too, and it’s very likely that iPhone 6 will ship with iOS 8 preinstalled sometime towards the end of the year too)
