Microsoft announced today the latest update to the Windows Phone operating system, Windows Phone 8.1. This update brings several new features such as a more customizable start screen and lockscreen themes. One feature looked slightly familiar to fans of iOS or Android, however: Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana.
Cortana is a voice control mechanism for your phone, much like Siri from iOS or Google Now on Android. The feature is named after an AI character from the Halo video game series. Microsoft is touting Cortana as the first truly personal digital assistant in order to differentiate themselves from existing products. In Microsofts own words:
Powered by Bing, Cortana is the only digital assistant that gets to know you, builds a relationship that you can trust, and gets better over time by asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes you’re interested in something. She detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you.
Reportedly, Cortana will launch in beta mode, much like Siri did. The release will come in the second half of 2014 for customers in the US, UK, and China, and in 2015 elsewhere. While the similarities to Siri are evident, it is also clear that Microsoft is trying hard to set themselves apart from the competition. It will be interesting to see what comes of this new player in the digital assistant field.
