Recently, there has been a lot of controversy over a new discovery that could lead to unusable iPhone. The issue was brought to attention on a thread about a tweak that changed the color of iPhone boot logo on reddit. People that did not follow the instructions carefully were having problems that potentially ruined their devices.
A proof of concept was quickly built showing the true potential of this issue. ArticSn0w created a package name KilliOS which would modify the device in such a way that it could never be used again utilizing the iPhone’s NVRAM.
TL;DR Be very careful. Please, I swear to god, do not install KilliOS. Please. If you do, I can’t help you fix your device. It’s very dangerous. It is only a proof of concept saying “Tweaks CAN do this”. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install. Do not install.
The proof of concept proves that anyone can sneak this code into a tweak and destroy anyone’s device whom downloads it. Therefore, use extreme caution when downloading packages from Cydia. Unless you are certain that a certain package is safe, do not download anything not from a default repository. Also, if you have OpenSSH installed we recommend you uninstall it or change your devices root password. We will have more updates as soon as we learn more about the threat of this hack. Make sure to follow our page on Facebook for up to date information.
There are plans of creating a device modification that will make it harder for NVRAM hacks to be exploited.
